The mechanism, plainly
Malassezia is not an invader. It lives on nearly every adult scalp. What makes it relevant to dandruff is how it eats.
Malassezia species are obligately lipid-dependent. Their genomes lack the fatty acid synthase genes needed to build fatty acids from scratch, so they have to take lipids from their surroundings — normally your sebum. Malassezia globosa carries around 14 lipase and 9 phospholipase genes, many of them expressed on human scalp, which it uses to break sebum down into usable parts.
That breakdown is where the trouble starts. Fungal lipases hydrolyse sebum triglycerides and release free fatty acids that irritate the skin, which disrupts keratinocytes and produces flaking. The yeast is not attacking you. It is eating, and the by-products are the rash.
So the argument against oiling a flaring scalp is not “oil is dirty” or “oil clogs the follicle.” It is narrower and better founded: you are adding substrate to a lipid-dependent organism, on skin that is already inflamed by what that organism does with lipids. On top of that, an occlusive layer on an already greasy scalp is not doing the barrier any favours.
The study that points the other way
Here is the part most anti-oiling pages leave out.
A 16-week longitudinal scalp microbiome study — 12 weeks of treatment plus a 4-week relapse phase, 140 Indian women (70 healthy, 70 with dandruff), around 900 metagenomic samples — tested topical coconut oil. The findings (Scientific Reports version):
- Cutibacterium acnes and Malassezia globosa increased in dandruff scalps, and both were negatively correlated with dandruff parameters
- Healthy-scalp bacterial pathways, such as biotin metabolism, were enriched
- Fungal pathogenesis pathways decreased
- The ratio of M. globosa to other Malassezia groups moved in line with healthy scalps
That is a well-designed study finding coconut oil moved dandruff scalps toward a healthier microbial profile. It does not sit comfortably with the mechanism above, and we are not going to pretend it does.
The reconciliation we find most plausible — and we are labelling it as inference, not fact — is that the community-level effect of a fatty acid is not the same as feeding a single organism, and that species composition within Malassezia may matter more than total Malassezia. But that is a hypothesis about a disagreement, not a resolution of it.
This is why the page is rated weak. The mechanism is solid biology. Its application to “should I put oil on my flaking scalp” has not been tested properly, and the one good longitudinal study available cuts the other way.
What we would actually tell someone
Not “never oil.” The practice predates every product in this article and has a real cosmetic case for the hair shaft.
If you are actively flaring: stop oiling the scalp for now. Treat the flare first with an antifungal — ketoconazole 1%, zinc pyrithione, or selenium sulfide 1%. Reintroduce oiling afterwards, one variable at a time, and watch what happens over a few weeks. You will learn more from that than from any page, including this one.
If you oil for hair health rather than scalp health: oil the lengths, not the roots. That is where the evidence for oiling is strongest and where the mechanism above does not apply.
If you want to oil the scalp anyway: favour squalane or fractionated MCT, which sit outside or largely outside the fatty-acid chain lengths Malassezia is described as using. Mineral oil is another inert option. Coconut oil is the one with lauric acid, and the one with the strongest argument on both sides.
If oiling clearly helps you: keep doing it. Personal response beats mechanism, and the microbiome study suggests you are not imagining it.
Being fair to the practice
A lot of English-language skincare writing treats hair oiling as a naive folk habit to be corrected. That framing is both rude and wrong. It is a long-running practice with real cosmetic benefit for hair fibre, and the one rigorous microbiome study on the subject was run in the population that actually does it.
The correct criticism is much narrower: oiling is a poor treatment for an active dandruff flare, because dandruff has a lipid-dependent organism at the centre of it. That is a statement about timing and about one specific condition. It is not a verdict on the practice.
